The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) (Irish: Páirtí Sóisialta Daonlathach an Lucht Oibre), was a left-wing Irish nationalist political party in Northern Ireland and was both the largest nationalist party in Northern Ireland, having overtaken the previously dominant Irish Parliamentary Party in the June 2020 Northern Ireland Assembly election, and the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, continuing to maintain a strong presence in polling and approaching towards a majority percentage of the vote by the time that they rebranded.
In it's latest form, it was originally formed as the Northern Irish branch of the Celtic Coalition, but on 2 September 2021, following a departure of Forward from the Celtic Coalition, Lady_Aya rebranded the Celtic Coalition to solely the SDLP and decided to focus primarily on Northern Ireland. During the December 2021 Northern Ireland Assembly election, SDLP gained 19 seats and formed Official Opposition in Stormont. Following talks between the Progressive Workers Party, SDLP and the Labour Party, SDLP and the Progressive Workers Party merged into the Labour Party.
Foundation and Ascent to First Minister
SoSaturnistic was succeeded by the former LPNI First Minister BoredNerdyGamer who had joined the party in 2020 from Labour and had widely been seen as having a strong set of credentials to lead the Northern Irish branch of Solidarity.
Republicanism and Rebranding
The party's last leader in the format of the Social Democratic and Labour Party was ABrokenHero who was elected after BoredNerdyGamer's resignation from the party in order for him to be able to step into the Devolved Speaker role. ABrokenHero was seen as having considerably stronger rhetoric on their part for Irish Nationalism and took the SDLP towards a more republican line after their ascent to the role as Leader, eventually rebranding the party into Sinn Féin.
Reformation and return to moderate Nationalism
Following the June 2021 Northern Ireland Assembly election the former LPNI leader, Lady_Aya, refounded the SDLP as the Northern Irish branch of the Celtic Coalition. Lady_Aya would become a prominent force within Northern Ireland and on 2 September 2021, decided to focus primarily on Northern Ireland and rebranded the entirety of Celtic Coalition to the SDLP following the departure of Forward.
Merger with LPNI and December 2021 Northern Ireland Assembly Elections
Following talks with the Labour Party of Northern Ireland, on 13 October 2021, LPNI merged into the Social Democratic and Labour Party, bringing the amount of MLA up to 16 and allowing the SDLP to enter the Executive.
Lady_Aya and Inadorable brought the SDLP into the December 2021 Northern Ireland Assembly election, bringing the number of SDLP MLAs up to 19. While this was not the result that some hoped, it was a marked improvement of the performance of the LPNI. Following brief talks after the negotiations, the Social Democratic and Labour Party decided to enter into opposition following the hardline nature of the Combined Unionist Alliance and the SDLP's opinion that they are trying to hold the Nationalist community at gun's point.
